Under Schaeffer's guidance and vision, ITW and FASICLD were started in Carmel California as a think-tank and Bible literacy project. This endeavor came into fruition the late 70's to strategize how to reach and train pastors and church leaders to focus on Christ centered principles.

As a pastor I hear this lament all of the time, sometimes it even comes from my own lips, "Why doesn't God help me in my troubles?" This is a legitimate question to ask. A lot of Christians tend to be afraid of asking God why, or earnestly seek to resolve their crisis. Thinking I do not have enough faith or I would not go through this. Mark Dever rightly describes Expositional Preaching as "preaching that takes for the point of a sermon the point of a particular passage of Scripture." However, I have heard many sermons that intend to be expositional, yet fall somewhat short. Below are seven pitfalls that one might try to avoid. Each of these pitfalls either doesn't correctly make the message of the passage the message of the sermon, or doesn't make it a message to that congregation at all.
